What’s Your Story?

A SUPER DAY AT KIDIMU! Meet Skyli, a three-year-old Supergirl who celebrated a very special occasion at KiDiMu.

Superheroes come in all shapes and sizes… At KiDiMu, we meet them year-round and are often enchanted by their adorable costumes, boundless imagination, and courage to tackle daily challenges.

Last summer, we were honored to get to know Skyli Raine, who loves imaginative play, flying and surprise eggs, and beat cancer with her perseverance, positive attitude and support from her family, friends and her community.

In partnership with Make-A-Wish Foundation® Alaska and Washington, the local organization that fulfills the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions, KiDiMu hosted a “Farewell to Cancer Party” for Skyli last July. Guests donned Superhero T-shirts and costumes in recognition of the strength and bravery it took for Skyli to defeat acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and several other conditions, she had suffered from since infancy. Fittingly, Skyli came dressed as Supergirl.

It was a super day all the way around! Together with her family and friends, they came as guests of KiDiMu to celebrate a mighty victory: Skyli was cancer-free. With her red cape fluttering behind her, Skyli swooshed down the tree house slide and rushed an overflowing grocery cart through the checkout line. She set out on imaginary adventures from behind the wheel of the ferry and then from behind the wheel of the car. Skyli’s love for imaginative play was on full display at KiDiMu. Her parents, cousins, aunts and uncles all joined in the fun as Skyli made joyous memories that should be a part of every childhood.

“We are honored to be a part of Skyli’s story,” said KiDiMu’s executive director Susie Burdick. “As an organization that believes in the importance of play, we are thrilled to be able to treat this child – who has been through so much – to a morning of delight and discovery. That’s what we are all about.”

Skyli’s victory celebration was made possible thanks to donors who support the Museum’s mission with their generous contributions. In addition, the mighty Supergirl received a membership so that she could catch up on play and learning with her loved ones.

We are gathering memories and pictures that tell the story of KiDiMu and the power of play. Would you like to share yours? Please contact km@kidimu.org.
